The Things We Had Extra

“not need anything back”

Five hundred twenty-eight blocks of obsidian came out of shaxter_323’s drawer before supper. WildMitchell had asked what he could trade; Shax answered, “not need anything back,” pointed at the drawer, and then stayed for the important municipal discussion of where, exactly, anyone puts nine different kinds of things. TheArkanite and Shax reached the same solution at once: nine drawers.

The joke worked because the town kept proving the rule. TheArkanite offered dirt to anybody with terraforming ahead. Shax took Mac_Attack9 across the map for desert treasure, endured a temple, a Warden-dark fall “to Narnia,” and found the Topaz template after Mac had gone to bed. Homestead spent the day turning one person’s surplus into someone else’s next step.

Overnight, the exchange became quieter. Wolfprism handed kaestar the spare from a pair he had made because it might make building easier. kaestar offered food. Wolf added another layer to the farm, showed kaestar how to send stone down a conveyor for fast smelting, and gathered supplies while the trading hall took shape. Palm wood prompted one immediate planning decision—“BEACHOUSE”—and the pair stopped beneath a beautiful sky to trade dreams of seeing the northern lights.

Nobody called it an economy. It looked more like doors left open and machines paused long enough to explain.

What Leaves the Drawer Next?

  • What will 528 obsidian become? Does kaestar’s beach house reach the shoreline? Which project gets TheArkanite’s next load of dirt?
  • Send the newsroom a picture of something a neighbor helped make possible.
